Making a Difference

Schools of Sanctuary

We are a School of Sanctuary

What is a School of Sanctuary?

Schools of Sanctuary are a growing network of over 1,200 primary and secondary schools, nurseries  and sixth forms all committed to creating a culture of welcome and inclusion  for refugees and people seeking asylum.

This network supports the thousands of young people seeking sanctuary in the Uk, raises awareness of the issues facing people in the asylum system, challenges misconceptions and builds social cohesion.

The Schools of Sanctuary Pledge

“We support the ‘City of Sanctuary’ vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

We endorse the City of Sanctuary Charter, and agree to act in accordance with City of Sanctuary values and apply the network principles within our work (as far as our specific context enables us to).

We recognise the contribution of people seeking sanctuary. People seeking sanctuary are welcomed, included and supported at Moorland Primary School.

Our School of Sanctuary

'Welcome Group'

Moorland's 'Welcome Group' is a group of pupils within the school who work together to help ensure that the school is a welcoming and inclusive place for all children and their families, including refugees and asylum seekers. We aim to make everyone feel valued for who they are, and to celebrate the wonderful diversity of our school and local communities. We help to organise and publicise events which encourage community understanding and  togetherness such as our "Living, Laughing and Learning Together' afterschool community sharing event which we held during Refugee Week, and the 'Day of the Soup', which was held in the local church, supported by 'Oasis' ( our local refugee charity ), St Saviour's Church and other members of the local community.
